MACKEREL | Scomber scombrus
Mackerel
Mackerel is one of the most prolific fish in the ocean and was a staple catch for local fishermen fishing from currachs in the first half of the century. It is an oily fish with dark flesh that turns almost white when cooked. Mackerel has a distinctive "fishy" flavour that puts some diners off, but is superb when cooked correctly.
